Humble Beginnings
From an early age, I realized that I really liked doing two things: helping people and math.
The math came first. From an early age math was my strongest subject. Every year the problems would get harder and harder and I never backed down. I went head to head with the really tough ones and before I knew it I was winning.
By the time I made it to High School, I was convinced I wanted to spend my life working with numbers, I just didn’t know how I was gonna do it.
At some point, we were offered the opportunity to take college-level courses, and in my senior year, everything came together. I finally realized what I wanted to do with my life.
I wanted to be an accountant.
Even before enrolling in college, I was helping people with their returns. In 1999 I filed my first returns and there’s been thousands more over the years.
By the time I graduated in 2004, I was already working for local accounting firms and was starting to get real experience. Most of the clients I worked with were home service pros who worked long hours and had no time for anything else.
Then something happened. Something clicked.
I realized that I could really make a big difference with these home service pros. So many of them didn’t understand bookkeeping or taxes. That meant they were paying way too much to the IRS and losing plenty more in other areas.
This was my peanut butter meets chocolate moment. This would be my focus. One day I would open my own practice that specialized in helping these businesses grow faster and earn more.
After 16 years of working at other firms and saving my pennies, I finally had enough money and experience to set up shop for myself, and I’ve never looked back.
